That’s not to say that your parents aren’t lying to you, of course; you just shouldn’t take “the voices in my head said so” as evidence for it. (Or as evidence for anything else, really) Historically, when voices in your head start telling you to trust and listen to them over authority figures with actual real-life bodies, they tend not to have your best interests in mind. Even when they aren’t imaginary.
