If you sacrifice people for land, then both the land and people will be lost. Sacrifice land for people and the people may regain their land later.
Mao was right, sacrificing people is a dumb move unless it nets you more people than the alternative. Wealth and power comes from talent, diligence and expertise, not possessions.
Lance was never the smart one to deal with problems. He also had no compassion. So there might just be some attachment/intimacies for the smallest of children.
